75 years ago: Ed Candelaria, “farmer and sheepman of the lower Piedra,” was a weekend business visitor in Durango.
50 years ago: Bell Telephone System workers were in a nationwide strike, which had a negligible effect on Durango, according to Bill Hancock with the Mountain States Telephone Co. Telephone service in the area was predicted to remain intact, though it was possible the strike would curtail long-distance calls.
25 years ago: Firefighters and law enforcement responded to three out-of-control burns in the area, including a fire in the 400 block of Hylander Road reported to the Durango Police Department, a ditch fire in the 300 block of Columbine Drive reported to the Bayfield Marshal’s Office and a field fire along County Road 216 reported to the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office.
