And the West is History

100 years ago: “Will Wigglesworth, of the engineering firm of Wigglesworth & Skoog, spent yesterday at Cedar Hill fixing up Charley Johnson’s siphon.”

75 years ago: An advertisement read: “Durango’s some place to go – Trimble Springs. Dine, dance, swim. This week floor-show The Modernettes. Oh boy! Can they dance!”

50 years ago: “La Plata County Cowbelles will be giving a lot of beef for Father’s Day this year. They’ll continue their practice of many years and give a beef roast to the first baby born on Father’s Day. The beef will match the baby’s weight pound for pound. In addition they will sponsor the give-away of two beef roasts at each of four markets.”

25 years ago: “Fireworks – $5,000 worth – have been ordered for Durango’s Independence Day display, according to the project’s fundraiser. Restaurant owner Chuck Norton ordered the custom fireworks on deadline from a Salt Lake City company. Volunteers from the American Legion will shoot the hour-long display from the Fort Lewis College rim at the top of Chapman Hill on July 4.”
