The cornerstone was laid for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, No. 507, in 1925 at Ninth Street and East Second Avenue. Durango Elks Lodge still uses the same building today, at 901 East Second Ave.

100 years ago: Examinations to qualify teachers for the approaching school year were being held in Durango.

75 years ago: A motorboat caught fire and sank at Electra Lake. Fortunately, all the people on the boat found their way to shore uninjured.

50 years ago: A news report announced that the annual Durango Recreation Aquatic Show was scheduled for Aug. 1 and would be held at the La Plata County Pool.

25 years ago: Durango Police Department reported that a small grass fire, “probably caused by cinders from the train,” started behind north City Market in the 3100 block of East Second Ave. and was extinguished by railroad employees.
