The cornerstone was laid for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, No. 507, in 1925 at Ninth Street and East Second Avenue. Durango Elks Lodge still uses the same building today, at 901 East Second Ave.
100 years ago: “The Durango band” presented a stage production, directed by Mrs. J.M. Sulivan, of the comedy-musical “Pocahontas.”
75 years ago: Local residents were reminded that a copy of the inspirational book “I Dare You” by William H. Danforth was available at the public library.
50 years ago: Kenneth Monfort, Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from Colorado, visited Durango and Ignacio to talk to residents about the upcoming election.
25 years ago: A wood pile caught fire near a camper at 9665 County Road 141. The blaze was reportedly caused by a man burning trash in a barrel at the location.
