100 years ago: “That an attempt will soon be made to put Durango in the class with perfectly decorous town on Sunday and at the same time reduce the number of saloons, is indicated by a draft of an ordinance left at the city hall which it is understood will soon be initiated here. The ordinance provides for the closing of all pool halls from midnight Saturday to 6 a.m. Monday. The removal of all card tables and chairs will take place in both.”

75 years ago: “Today the Herald-Democrat proudly announces two innovations worthy of comment – the addition of a brand new linotype of the latest model, and the changing of its appearance through the use of a modern, extremely legible body type face in its news columns. The new linotype – a model 32 – is capable of handling eight faces of type.”

50 years ago: “The wind blew in gusts of as much as 68-70 miles an hour at the city-county airport. ... Richard Fryback, 1212 Fourth Ave., said he and his wife, sitting in their living room looked out the window to see shingles from their roof sailing by.”

25 years ago: “Directors of Mercy Medical Center have announced the appointment of David Jacobsen as chief executive officer of the hospital. Jacobsen, 57, said he was delighted to accept the position.”
