And the West is History

100 years ago: “Initial work on the construction of Durango’s new $175,000 high school building began, when ground was broken to make a test of the nature of the earth on which the building is to rest, and to determine the depth of excavation which will be required for the foundation.”

75 years ago: “Durango stores will remain open until 8 o’clock on Saturday nights starting April 1.”

50 years ago: “Light snow was falling on the mountain passes leading from Durango, and Frontier was forced to overfly both Thursday evening and Friday morning. The Durango office of the Colorado State patrol reported a foot of new snow was measured on Coalbank and six inches on Wolf Creek.”

25 years ago: The Gaslight Twin, 102 E. Fifth Street, was showing “Joe Versus the Volcano.” Billing read, “The first comedy hit of the 1990’s.”
