And the West is History

100 years ago: “The St. Columbus parochial school opened with 85 pupils, in charge of Sister Mary Nicholas, who was here several years ago, and has been since then in the Cripple Creek and St. Joseph’s School at Denver.”

75 years ago: “Dr. Dudley P. Glick completed the second inspection of potatoes for certification in the county. The certified seed crop is looking much better at this time than it was a year ago. Growers have spent considerable time and money in controlling psyllids and flea beetles and in roguing out diseased.”

50 years ago: “Today marked the third straight day that only one section of the Silverton narrow gauge train made the trip up the Animas Valley as traffic trailed off due to many tourists returning home for the start of school.”

25 years ago: “The La Plata County commissioners have given unanimous land-use approval for a gas-treatment facility that will be the hub of Amoco Production Co.’s coal-gas facility operations in the county. ... The approval is contingent on Amoco reaching an agreement with the county to pay for projected construction damage to County Road 307.”
