100 years ago: “The Poncha Pass highway is open and from 20 to 40 autos per day pass over it. Poncha is the lowest pass available in Colorado and will make a great speedway of the entire San Luis Valley. The popular route will be via Salida, the Royal Gorge, Canon City and Pueblo.”
75 years ago: “D.A. James M. Noland and A.D.A. E. Ellison Hatfield investigated the theft of the bell from the Orr school east of Durango on Highway 160. The bell was stolen from the school tower presumably some time Saturday night.”
50 years ago: The Kiva theater was showing “The Great Escape” starring Steve McQueen, James Garner and Richard Attenborough.
25 years ago: “The La Plata County commissioners have two months to cut $1 million out of the proposed 1989 county operating budget, and ‘It’s going to get bloody,’ says Finance Director Bob Siverson. Department heads and citizen budget committees pleaded their cases before the commissioners last week, and the finance department now has until Sept. 20 to prepare the final proposed budget.”
