And the West is History

100 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. Ed McCaw, of the Florida Mesa were in the city, the former to look after business at the county offices and the latter to attend to shopping errands in the downtown stores.”

75 years ago: “The Durango City Council, backed by the expressed opinion of a number of prominent Durango citizens, took a step which may possibly make the city a defendant in a lawsuit, when it unanimously refused to issue a building permit for a filling station to be erected at 6th Street and Third Avenue.”

50 years ago: “With a lot of luck, and everything breaking right, Fort Lewis College could have its new million-dollar library by the time the fall trimester begins in 1966. The state board of agriculture, the college’s governing body, authorized Pres. Dr. John F. Reed to contact Bill Ashbury of the Denver office of Federal Housing and Home Financing administration to check the schedule of bidding for a possible bid date. It is expected that the date will be in late July.”

25 years go: “The Durango City Council embraced plans for a homeless shelter, calling it a ‘great benefit for the community.’ The council, which is also donating a house and leasing a site, approved the permit for the shelter off Avenida del Sol on a 5-0 vote.”
