The caption on this July 16, 1963, photo read: “Front of the Trimble Springs Hotel, dark for several years, was blackened by smoke in a fire which gutted the historic landmark which has served the southwest since 1896. The plate glass doors which filled the archway shattered with a resounding crash when the flames overheated them.”

100 years ago: “T.C. Graden received a fine box of mixed fruit, parcel post, from George Alleen – the shipment lasted quick.”

75 years ago: “Excavation for the east abutment of the new highway bridge over the Animas River has reached the point where there is only a few feet before bedrock is reached.”

50 years ago: “Twenty-one members of the Skylark Flying Club of Los Angeles flew into Durango and are spending three days at the Golden Horseshoe. This group makes one big excursion each year. It was the Silverton train which drew them here this year, and they’ve reserved an entire car on the train.”

25 years ago: “A Southern Ute Indian blessing was bestowed on the new Polo Store in Durango. During grand opening ceremonies conducted by Eddie Box Sr., spiritual leader of the tribe. Box said the blessing would bring peace to employees and customers at the warehouse store, located in Rio Grande Land.”
