And the West is History

100 years ago: “H. Lilly bought a big bill of supplies at the Otis-McGirr Mercantile company’s store in anticipation of a trip into the hills to do some mining property assessment work.”

75 years ago: “Although a trifle slow in getting under way this year the San Juan Basin Seed & Poultry Show is speedily shaping up, and the exhibits at the Belmont Hall should be completed this afternoon.”

50 years ago: HESPERUS – “Thirty-three registered Hereford bulls were sold for an average price of $440 per head at the 16th annual bull sale conducted at the San Juan Branch Experiment Station by the San Juan Basin Hereford Assn. The champion bull was sold by Sitton Ranches of Bayfield and purchased by Jarvis and Sons of Durango for $700.”

25 years ago: “The City Council appears to be the biggest obstacle skateboarders must jump in order to get a place to ride in a city park. Worries about insurance costs and supervision dominate the council’s questions as they considered whether a skateboard park should be built at Chapman Hill or Schneider Park.”
