100 years ago: “John M. Robran of the Florida Mesa, was a business visitor in the city to buy Sunday supplies and learn the latest war news ‘24 hours earlier’ than it happens.”
75 years ago: “Stealing a quantity of coal from the D & RG railroad landed a Durango man in the county bastile to serve a 10-day term at hard labor. The man had approximately a dollars worth of purloined coal in his possession.”
50 years ago: Gem Village – “The cooler, damp weather seems to be causing a lot of trouble with the phones in the area, much to the distress of the phone company. But they are good about working fast and trying to restore service, often with much difficulty in tracking down the exact spot. We do appreciate it, in spite of our little gripes.”
25 years ago: “A bolt of lightning blew apart the front fender on a pickup and put a hole in its tire during a spectacular thunder and lightning storm that dumped ¾ of an inch of rain. The lightning bolt struck a tree next to the pickup and apparently was drawn by the vehicle’s steel-belted radial tire.”
