100 years ago: “The pupils of St. Columba’s school had a very enjoyable picnic at Junction Creek all day. They were accompanied by the teaching sisters and Father Callanan, and indulged in all kinds of games and races to their hearts content till late in the afternoon when they returned very tired but delighted with their day’s experiences on land and water.”
75 years ago: “With the warming up of weather conditions in Durango, bicycles are once more becoming a nuisance as well as a danger. Boys and girls who carelessly pedal their wheels around the city streets should remember that the thoroughfares were built primarily for the convenience of automobiles, not bicycles.”
50 years ago: “Forty-six years ago Alice Hunt mounted the steps to a one-room country schoolhouse in this county – her first teaching assignment. Today, Mrs. Alice Paxton, after teaching grade school for nearly a half-century in this area, has only two more weeks to go in her dedicated career. On May 31 she will sit in front of a classroom of bright-eyed youngsters for the last time at Sunnylane Elementary School on Florida Mesa.”
25 years ago: “Construction on the La Plata County Courthouse extension and remodeling project is five days a head of schedule. J-M Constructors of Durango broke ground March 2 for the $2.19 million project that will add 28,740 square foot addition to the south side of the courthouse and provide 10,660 square feet in remodeled space in the existing building.”
