100 years ago: “Miss Marie Hollingsworth returned to her home in Silverton after a brief visit with Durango friends. As a souvenir of her visit, she carried home with her a beautiful bouquet of lilacs, grown in the yard at the Judge Pike home, the first of the season.”
75 years ago: “Early this week, Durango suffered a wave of petty crime when attempted break-ins were made at five residences. As nearly as can be learned, the attempts were unsuccessful. Durango police believe the attempts were made by children but as yet have not obtained positive proof.”
50 years ago: This item appeared in the section called Junior High Jottings: “After what seemed to be an endless period of work, worry and waiting, the long anticipated Freshman Frolic has come and gone. With the theme, ‘A Summer Place,’ beautiful decorations, and excellent entertainment, the Frolic was one of the best.”
25 years ago: “When the smoke cleared from a three-hour debate, the Durango City Council voted 4-1 to continue to study a no-smoking ordinance. The council listened to about 20 people – evenly divided over the issue – tell why they thought city government should regulate smoking in public places or why it should be left to individual businesses to decide.”
