100 years ago: Tom Hamor, superintendent of the local fish hatchery, left for Pagosa Springs with 45,000 trout frys in embryo, which he will place in the San Juan River.
75 years ago: Until just recently Durango has enjoyed a dearth of panhandles, probably due to the isolated location of the city. But the scene has changed almost overnight, and it looks as though the panhandlers union has taken over the town.
50 years ago: La Plata County Sheriffs Posse Queen of 1963 is Doneva Paulek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Grant Paulek of Hesperus. Doneva is a sophomore at Durango High School Her attendants will be Marcia Farmer and Enel Dennison.
25 years ago: The Houston Oilers have chosen Southwest Texas State University, in San Marcos, Texas, over Fort Lewis College as their new preseason training facility. Southwest Texas State was chosen because of its proximity to Houston. San Marcos is 150 miles west of Houston.
