75 years ago: The gymnasium of Fort Lewis College was the scene of a most interesting and entertaining exhibition performed by physical education classes of the athletic department of the college. The first division of the program consisted of folk dances, the second portion consisted of tumbling stunts and pyramid building.
50 years ago: A Durango youngster apparently escaped without serious injury in an encounter with a cyanide bomb put out on a sheep range to control coyotes. The youngster suffered a minor abrasion on his hand, and a slight discoloration of the face from the poisonous fumes released by the bomb. ... The bait bomb was identifiable as a button sticking in the ground.
25 years ago: In one fell swoop, La Plata County voters purged the Community Hospital board of directors and replaced it with four new board members willing to work toward a consolidated health system in Durango. In a classic rural/city split. Voters in Bayfield, Ignacio, Fort Lewis Mesa and Florida Mesa voted to retain the ousted board. Voters in the four Durango precincts tipped the scales toward the boards defeat.
