And the West is History

100 years ago: “Evan Thomas, bookkeeper at Perins, and Miss Ella Siggins, well-known young lady, secured a marriage license and requested that the matter be kept secret.”

75 years ago: “Despite the moderating weather, which has opened several ponds, skating is reported still good on the McCormick and Wiebe sloughs.”

50 years ago: “Today’s cloudy skies – and some snow in the high country – ended a long spell of winter sunshine. The temperature was still a mild 42 degrees this morning, but it was considerably lower than temperatures for almost a week which have been 59 degrees and in the 60s.”

25 years ago: “At least 45 family members were signed up for free transportation to Fort Carson Army Post to visit with loved ones serving with National Guard’s 928th Medical Company. Family support volunteers manned phone lines at the Durango and Cortez armories in an effort to inform all relatives of the opportunity. ... No official announcement has been made, but some speculate that the company will be deployed to Saudi Arabia as part of Operation Desert Shield shortly after they return from leave.”
