100 years ago: “One of the two fellows who recently stole a mackinaw coat from the Straebel & Hutchinson cigar store is confined at the city jail; the other at the county jail. The two men are being kept apart by the authorities who believe they are the thieves who entered the Stein store several weeks ago to prevent their framing up a story.”

75 years ago: “Merwyn Arnold, Silverton slayer, was committed to the state insane institution in Pueblo by a lunacy board. Arnold had been sent to Pueblo for observation and examination and the institute officials reported that Arnold was insane. .... On Sept. 7 this year, Arnold walked into a drink establishment at Silverton and fired several shots from an automatic, heavy-caliber rifle at Louis Rogers, who was standing at the bar. Rogers was killed instantly. Arnold surrendered peaceably.”

50 years ago: “U.S. Rep. Wayne N. Aspinall notified the Herald that the Housing and Urban Development Department has announced a $1.6 million college housing loan for new student facilities, including dormitory and student center, to be constructed at Fort Lewis College. ... The project will include a new dormitory complex to be constructed on the northern part of the old campground. This will be a series of six small ‘cottage type’ buildings housing about 50 students each. The new student center will be built just east and south of the new library now under construction.”

25 years ago: “A product of a Durango video production company was reviewed in the Nov. 19 issue of People magazine. The ‘Single Parenting’ video features interviews by Jean and Veryl Rosenbaum of an array of parents and children living in the aftermath of divorce. Jean is a psychiatrist and Veryl is a lay psychoanalyst. Both are retired and living in Durango.”
