100 years ago: “The celebration of Halloween has already started. A crew of young kids who seem anxious to take the ‘hallow’ out of Halloween have been busy for several nights. Halloween falling on Sunday this year, Saturday night will be generally observed and many social gatherings have been planned.”
75 years ago: “Buyers of cavalry horses for the U.S. Army will be in Durango. As previously announced, only horses will be bought, and they must be well broken to saddle and in perfect condition. ... In Durango, horses are to be brought to the Rio Grande shipping pens.”
50 years ago: “Are you glad to see the end of daylight saving time today? An instant poll by the Herald seems to prove that most residents of La Plata County heaved a sigh of relief as they set their clocks back an hour to mark the end of the first year in a two-year experiment in summer daylight saving before the Colorado Legislature brings the matter to a vote of the people.”
25 years ago: “High school students from the Durango area had a rare opportunity to view a high court in action as the Colorado Supreme Court heard oral arguments on three cases at Fort Lewis College. Approximately 450 students from 10 high schools in La Plata, Archuleta, San Juan and Montezuma counties attended the event. The students had studied the Supreme Court in classes, and many were equipped with worksheets to help them follow the arguments.”
