And the West is History

100 years ago: “City Manager Hood has a force of men at work putting crushed stone on Fifth Avenue and other streets where it is badly needed. The county stone crusher is being used.”

75 years ago: “Occupying a cell in the La Plata County Jail is Mary O’Brien, better known up and down Main Avenue as Molly O’Brien (and probably known still better by another name, yet undisclosed). Molly was taken before the Justice of Peace to answer to short check charges. She pleaded guilty and was fined $10 and costs and sentenced to 30 days in jail.”

50 years ago: “La Plata Commissioners gave Hillcrest golf course permission to relocate a county road in plans for an 18-hole golf course.”

25 years ago: “Highway repairs to southbound lanes of Main Avenue between 15th and 24th streets continue with a conservative approach. Shorter sections will be excavated and repaved than were attempted in summer to reduce inconvenience to businesses and drivers and because of the possibility of changing weather conditions.”
