And the West is History

“City employees show their support for the Durango-Denver Broncos Day in front of a banner in the finance office of City Hall as proclaimed by Mayor Lynn Shine in January 1990. The Broncos will meet the San Francisco 49ers in New Orleans for Super Bowl XXIV.”

100 years ago: “City Manager Hood had workmen busy draining the reservoir so the source of the city’s water supply could be cleaned. The work at the reservoir is responsible for the milky appearance of the water at times during the past few days.”

75 years ago: “The Sacred Heart Church in South Durango, under construction for the past year, is near completion. Stained-glass windows memorializing several Durango families are being installed. The new church, one of the most beautiful in Southwestern Colorado, is largely due to the efforts of Father Anthony Sagrera.”

50 years ago: ”Anyone interested in the care and treatment of mentally ill youngsters should drive out the east Animas to Pinerock Ranch and have a tour and a talk with its proprietors. These are Mr. and Mrs. C.E. Hoover, once Colorado school teachers.” The school was to have space for 20 children.

25 years ago: “The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge railroad counted 197,991 riders during its 1990 season, which ended Oct. 28. The figure represents a 1.5 percent decrease from last year’s total. An effort to increase ridership on the D&SNG will be undertaken in 1991, but fares will not increase.”
