100 years ago: Sunnyside – “The Sunday School is planning for a picnic Children’s Day in the beautiful cottonwood grove near the new Sunnyside bridge. Come and bring the little ones and well filled basket and make this a day to be remembered by the children.”
75 years ago: “Tomorrow is Poppy Day in Durango and all over the U.S. This is one day out of the year on which everyone should wear a flower in his buttonhole.”
50 years ago: “For planting which began in the vicinity of McClure Park on the Florida River, the Forest Service began receiving its stock of seedling Lodgepole Pine from the U.S.F.S. nursery at Basalt. About 16,000 seedlings were dropped by plane.”
25 years ago: “There are many good, young, promising riders coming up through the ranks of mountain bike racing, but two of the best say they have no intention of letting the world roll past them. When you mention mountain bike racing, and especially the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic, a couple of Durangoans always come to mind. Ned Overend, preparing to enter his eighth IHBC, and Lisa Muhich, going on her fifth year, are as well-known as any mountain bike racer could hope to be.”
