100 years ago: An advertisement read: “Did you know that the new city coal is now selling at $3 a ton by the wagon load? It is or you can get a single ton for $3.25. San Juan coal same price. – Royal Coal & Coke Co.”
75 years ago: This appeared in the section called Fort Lewis News: “If grants can be obtained, a new library may be built at Fort Lewis this fall and in addition to this plans and specifications are being prepared for at least two new cottages, a dormitory for vocational students and some future repairs on buildings which are now in use.”
50 years ago: Ignacio – “Sale of the Ignacio Chieftain and Bayfield Blade newspaper was announced this past week by the owners, Fay and Charlotte Jones. Purchaser is Dick Carmack of Sacramento, Calif. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Carmack who were longtime residents of Bayfield. The Jones have owned, published and edited the Chieftain since 1934.”
25 years ago: “Failing to recoup expenses for repairing allegedly defective and incomplete electrical, heating and ventilation work on the new La Plata County Jail, the county filed suit in 6th Judicial District Court against three construction companies and two bonding companies involved in the jail project. Not only did the companies complete their portion of the work on the new jail a year late, but it resulted in ‘defective, incomplete and/or inoperable electrical and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) systems, subsystems and installations which did not conform to the contract document,’ the suit alleges.”
