The caption on this July 31, 1988, photo read, “Neither this rider nor his bronc look like they were enjoying the party at Fiesta Days rodeo.”

100 years ago: “A number of Durango people will assist Animas Valley people in their search for the body of the late Carl Downing. Dynamite will be used in the driftwood between the Home ranch and Animas City in hopes that somewhere in the debris the body can be located.”

75 years ago: “A survey is being conducted of the elk-infested area of the Hermosa. Last fall a survey was made of the area by federal and state game officials. Their report was that the district was over-stalked with elk.”

50 years ago: “Open house for the Durango Recreation Department playgrounds will be held this week with nightly programs. ... Included in the evening activities at each school will be demonstrations of the various activities that have been taught on the playgrounds this summer. This activities will consist of archery, baton, ballet, modern dance, tumbling, tennis and arts and crafts.”

25 years ago: “Dr. Harvie Guest, former superintendent for School District 9-R, was unanimously selected as the new superintendent in Salida by school board members.”
