50 years ago: “One of the most serious and senseless acts of vandalism in recent years was discovered” at the Little League baseball fields in Cortez. Someone had shot out 33 of the lights used to light the fields and probably occurred months before.
25 years ago: The season’s first run of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge took off with 328 passengers, and 270 rode the train the next day. “The numbers were slightly below last year’s mark ... however, 1,246 riders took advantage of the railroad’s shorter run to the Cascade Wye during the previous two weeks.”
