And the West is History

100 years ago: “A shipment of nearly 75 sacks of ore from the Durango Girl Mine was brought to Durango last night by Mrs. Olga Little’s pack train. This is the first shipment, but the prospects for the mine to become one of the steady producers are favorable.”

75 years ago: “Completion of a WPA project Sept. 30 for the repair and improvement of La Plata County roads near Falfa and Bondad will be followed immediately by the opening of another WPA project for the reconstruction of roads near Bayfield and Missouri Center School.

50 years ago: “The Pine River Pow-Wow met at the home of Mrs. Walter Ostwald in Bayfield. Accompanied by Mrs. Ostwald, the group sang “There’s Music in the Air,” “Farewell to Summer” and “Little Brown Church in the Vale.” Mrs. Earl Canby told the group about the little church in Nashua, Iowa, whose minister composed this song. It has become popular for modern weddings.”

25 years ago: “A new air passenger service from Denver to Durango is being offered by Navajo Air Link. The flight isn’t glamorous, a company executive says, but the price is right. Navajo Air Link flies a freight run from Denver to Durango five days a week and has room for passengers at half the price it costs to fly on a commercial airliner. ... To fly Navajo costs $54 one way and $106 round-trip.”
