And the West is History

100 years ago: “Miss Faye Maxwell, who is to have charge of the English and Literature department of the Fort Lewis agricultural school this year, arrived. Later in the evening she continued by auto to the scene of her school duties. Maxwell is a graduate of the state teacher’s college and the University of Chicago, and appears in every way fitted to hold the responsible position.”

75 years ago: “Heavy planting of fish is being done by employees at the local hatchery who have made trips to the San Juan and Navajo rivers in Archuleta County, to the East and West Dolores rivers in Dolores County, to streams near Telluride in San Miguel County, and to the Pine, Vallecito and Florida rivers in La Plata County.”

50 years ago: “It’s a sure sign of autumn when sheepmen start trailing their flocks out of the mountains where they have been on summer range. ... Cattle which have summered in the National Forest will begin to move just before hunting season next month.”

25 years ago: “What began in 1987 as a two-year, $15 million cleanup of the Smelter Mountain uranium mill tailings will end in November, nearly a year after the original completion date and costing nearly double the amount projected. Delays and cost overruns were mainly caused by weather and upgraded disposal standards from the Environmental Protection Agency. ... The final bill for the clean-up will be approximately $27 million.”
