And the West is History

100 years ago: “Whoever was ignorant enough to whitewash the seats in the grandstand at the fairgrounds, ought to be made to sit in the muss a while. Many people had their clothing ruined during the fair.”

75 years ago: “More than 80,000 pounds of honey will be taken this season from the 800 stands of bees in the apiary operated by James R. Pierson and Vernon Culhane. Most of the honey, according to Culhane, is of sweet clover derivation, though the flavor varies considerably because of the presences of wildflower products.”

50 years ago: “Hundreds of persons jammed the 1200 block of Main Avenue for ceremonies dedicating the new home of The Durango Herald.”

25 years ago: “The ‘Old Willis House’ left the lot next to Durango City Hall bound for its new location at 1033 Avenida del Sol. The house will become the new Durango Community Shelter, a haven for up to 20 homeless people. Southwest Community Resources is overseeing the project, with funding coming from donations, Volunteers of America, Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Colorado Department of Housing. Volunteer workers will cook meals and help run the facility, while three full-time counselors will oversee operations.”
