75 years ago: “School opened at Cascade this morning with Miss Margaret Jones of Telluride as teacher.”
50 years ago: “At the conclusion of registration, more than 1,200 students had been enrolled for the fall trimester at Fort Lewis College. Exact figures will not be available until after Sept. 16, which is the last day on which students may add classes. ... Some 700 freshmen and new students enrolled, making the largest freshman class the college has ever had.”
25 years ago: “A tour of the former Community Hospital building at 3801 Main Ave. reflects the magnitude of changes in Durango’s health-care services. White-uniformed nurses are scarce, and hospital beds and heart monitors have been put in storage or sold since the La Plata County Hospital District closed its acute-care facilities in May. The building has been partially remodeled in a low-impact effort to accommodate some health-related services that have either expanded or need a home.”
