And the West is History

This picture appeared in the Sept. 4, 1988, Herald. The caption read, “This B-17G World War II bomber, Texas Raiders, will be on display this week at the Durango-La Plata County Airport as it makes a stopover between airshows in Utah and New Mexico.”

100 years ago: “City Manager Hood was instructed by the city commissioners to hire a dog catcher and take immediate steps to enforce the city ordinance requiring the payment of a dog tax. The city has so far issued licenses to only about half of the dog owners in town and the authorities are anxious to get the rest of them lined up for a settlement of the tax.”

75 years ago: “The 1941 Torpedo fleet is in, and Erwin Selby, who sells Pontiac Torpedoes, has devised a novel way of announcing the arrival of his fleet. Two Durango beauties – and they are just a sample of what grows here – dressed as Atlantic City sailor girls mounted on the hood of a 1941 Pontiac Torpedo, are riding through the streets of Durango, Silverton, Pagosa Springs and Rico and other of our sister towns, extending a printed invitation to visit the fleet anchored at the Selby-Pontiac company’s Durango ‘navy yard.’”
