100 years ago: “Joe Spatt, 19, and Felix Tavernaio, 35, the confessed murderers of John Jakino, the Perins saloon keeper, who was beaten to death and robbed by the pair on Aug. 14, broke jail by tunnelling through the north wall of the county jail. ... Sheriff Fassbinder offers a $50 reward for each man.”
75 years ago: “Talk about home beautification. Well, Mrs. C.G. Stanfield of 8th Street and Third Avenue is doing her share. In addition to her present display of beautiful seasonal flowers, she is having a big rose bed planted in the front lawn.”
50 years ago: “A big-game hunter reported that he saw a low-flying plane circling in the area of the Bessie G Mine in the La Plata Mountains. There was also a report of a plane being spotted down on Love Mesa in the Uncompahgre Plateau area between Gateway and Delta. These were the first leads in the disappearances of a light plane which has been missing since Monday with four Gunnison men aboard, three of them members of the Western State College football coaching staff.
25 years ago: “The Division of Wildlife will be at Vallecito Reservoir collecting eggs from migrating kokanee salmon. The two-day-a-week operation will supply fertilized eggs for kokanee stocking in Vallecito and other Colorado lakes and reservoirs. Of the nearly 1 million eggs expected be taken, 200,000 eggs are reserved for Vallecito Reservoir. The remaining eggs will be used to restock fisheries at such places as Granby, Williams Fork and Beaver Creek reservoirs, along with some eggs going to New Mexico.”
