And the West is History

100 years ago: “There seems to be an unusual number of cases of pneumonia in this vicinity at the present time. How some of the sweet young things who trot around with their wishbones bare to the breeze escape early deaths is more than a mere man can figure out.”

75 years ago: “Sgt. J.W. Anderson, Durango Army recruiter, received authorization to accept one-year enlistments in the Army, to be stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. These enlistments will apply on conscription quotas.”

50 years ago: “The October red tide is sweeping the Basin and merchants and inn keepers are rushing to meet it with open arms. The hunters are coming. From Texas, California, Missouri, Arkansas, Pennsylvania and Oklahoma, they’re rolling into town in their campers and Cadillacs. They’re swooping down in Pipers and jets. They’re pulling trailers of equipment and horses and mules.”

25 years ago: “The Bugmobile, from the University of Colorado, will visit Durango public schools. Entomologist Michael Weissmann will visit each elementary school, presenting 11 sessions each day. He will talk to about 2,000 students about insects and ecology. Started in 1988, the Bugmobile travels throughout the state for the ‘Science From CU’ program.”
