And the West is History

100 years ago: “The frame building on Main Avenue near 15th Street, owned by Dr. W.W. McEwen, was totally destroyed by fire. The structure, which was formerly occupied by a feed store, had been unoccupied for several years. ... Tramps are said to have made the empty building a hangout and they are supposed to have been responsible for the blaze.”

75 years ago: “Everything is set for a grand and glorious time in Durango the latter part of this week when the San Juan Basin Fair, Seed and Poultry Show will be held. Hundreds of exhibits of fruit, poultry, garden stuff, field crops, livestock, home economics and other displays such as new cars and merchant’s booths will be put in.”

50 years ago: “Hunters huddled in their tents, campers and trailers as rain turned to snow in the high country. Snow plows were out on Molas and Red Mountain passes and it was snowing in Silverton.”

25 years ago: “Highway construction crews are returning to Durango to finish paving U.S. Highway 550 on Camino del Rio and north Main Avenue. When the work is finished, 2.5 miles of highway will be repaved in concrete along with new medians, curbs and gutters for a price tag of $4 million.”
