Twenty-seven-year-old Durangoan Al Barnard was photographed with his bicycle in 1900 at his home, 828 East Fourth Ave. Between 1880 and the 1910s, bicycling enjoyed a rapid rise in popularity in the United States as a pleasurable and affordable means of transportation. Its prevalence in La Plata County mirrored the nationwide craze. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum (Catalog Number: 96.08.55.6 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
