And the West is History: Durango train wreck – ca. 1900

Unknown circumstances led to this derailment and wreck on the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, south of the Durango depot around 1900. Investigations of the Durango newspapers from that time do not identify this specific incident. Clothing worn by onlookers indicates a time period around the turn of the 20th century. The wreck occurred where Fifth Avenue connected with La Posta Road, near modern-day Santa Rita Park. A Conoco Oil warehouse is visible to the left, and the AS&R Smelter in the background. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum (Catalog Number: 07.16.22 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
