This photo shows Denver & Rio Grande Western engine 478 entering the south train yard in the late 1950s. Closer inspection reveals the tracks leading west from Durango had been removed. They were part of the Rio Grande Southern Railroad line abandoned in 1952. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is now converting engine 478 to an oil-burning locomotive. It began service in 1923 and will rejoin the D&SNG active locomotive roster soon. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org (Catalog Number: 15.33.276 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
