And the West is History: South Durango panorama – ca. 1891

Taken about 10 years after Durango’s founding, this panorama shows the southern end of town. Many open lots still existed as the city slowly filled its business and residential districts. Notice the ever-present smoke from the smelter. It is visible in every panoramic image taken through 1930. The well-defined lane transecting the left lower portion of the photo is Fifth Avenue. Eighth Street intersects midway along its length. – Ed Horvat for Animas Museum, edhorvat@animasmuseum.org (Catalog Number: 15.33.282 from the La Plata County Historical Society Photo Collections)
