Trent Andrews missed a game-winning free throw, then sent the game to overtime with a block worthy of an ESPN highlight.
The Durango High School boys basketball team defeated Cheyenne South High School (Cheyenne, Wyo.) 55-50 on Saturday in Palisade to close out its trip in the Palisade Rotary Invitational.
South (2-5) tied the game with a jumper with 23 seconds left, then Andrews was fouled under the basket.
DHS (4-3) led 38-28 at the start of the fourth quarter, but South stormed back with 16 points in the final frame to force overtime.
“We turned over the ball, made some mental mistakes,” DHS head coach Alan Batiste said. “They put that pressure on us.”
The Demons handled the pressure better and held the Bison to six points in the extra frame while scoring 11 to cement the victory.
“It basically came down to possession by possession when it turned to overtime,” Batiste said. “We stuck to our game plan. Dane Mestas hit a big 3, and we didn’t look back from there.”
Mestas led the Demons with 14 points, while Logan Geautheraux had 13, and Isiah Mayberry nearly picked up a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds for DHS.
Durango next will play against Ignacio High School on Jan. 11 at DHS.
“After this weekend, our biggest thing is coming out with energy from the get-go,” Batiste said. “Playing a complete game instead of playing in spurts.”
