Three races are complete, two remain in the Colorado Cycling League’s high school mountain bike calendar. The teams from Animas High School and Durango High School are in the thick of state championship contention in the league that is part of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association.
After three races, Animas is in second place in Division 1 and is narrowly behind Colorado Rocky Mountain School. CRMS leads with 14,883 points, and Animas is second with 14,335 points. Crested Butte sits a distant third with 13,426 points.
In Division 2, Durango has a slim lead with 7,785 points. Green Mountain is second with 7,703, followed by Highlander Composite’s 7,278 points.
The teams completed the Granby Ranch Roundup last weekend and will be back in action at the Chalk Creek Stampede for the conference championship race Oct. 7 at McMurry Ranch in Nathrop.
The state championship race will be held in Eagle Oct. 21-22. Next season, the state championships will come to Durango for the first time.
Durango’s Maddie Jo Robbins has been a force in the varsity girls division all year. After another win last weekend, she leads the overall series standings with 1,725 points.
Maya Zarlingo of Animas High is second with 1,677 points, and Animas’ Alma Wolf is fifth with 1,586 points.
Animas’ John White sits in 40th in the varsity boys division with 799 points.
The junior varsity, sophomore and freshman standings count toward a team’s overall state standings.
Junior varsity races have been loaded with Durango-area talent. Durango’s Cobe Freeburn leads the boys overall with 1,601 points, while Animas’ Riley Amos is close behind in second with 1,591 points. Simon Donnaway of Animas is ninth, Durango’s Luke Nicholson is 13th and Animas’ Henry Haggart sits in 15th.
Durango’s Ruth Holcomb is the JV girls overall leader with 1,620 points. Animas’ Sage Davis is eighth with 1,422 points, while teammate Grace Frideger is 10th with 1,375 points. Durango’s Amina Yqussefm is 25th, Animas’ Lillian Bisantz is 27th, Lilah Gutt of Animas is 30th and Durango’s Hailey Voss is 59th.
In the sophomore boys division, Durango’s Aaron Clark is 14th with 1,133 points. Animas’ Sean Holley is 37th, Durango’s Miles Bronson is 39th with 880 points, Nick Glotfelty of Animas is 87th and Animas teammate Calvin Chase is 125th.
The freshman girls standings also are close. Independent rider Cassidy Hickey is first with 1,480 points. Only 71 points back is Durango’s Abbey Shepard. Animas’ Ainsley Haggart is fourth with 1,361 points, and teammate Emerald Murray is fifth with 1,316. Durango’s Aleah Austin is seventh with 1,284 points, Durango’s Kelsey Nicholson is 11th with 1,206 points and Durango’s Lucy Hall is 31st with 726 points.
The freshman boys are led by Animas’ Trevor Harms, who is in ninth overall with 1,250 points. Leit Schafer of Animas is 15th, Durango’s Hayes Linney is 24th, Durango’s Wiley Corra is 28th, Animas’ Colby Doughty is 96th, Durango’s Paul Watson is 104th and Vincent Lopez of Animas is 123rd.
