Animas Grange to host cheesemaking presentation

Dan James of James Ranch cuts a slice of cheese from a large wheel at the La Plata County Fairgrounds during the Holiday Farmers’ Market in 2010.

Dan James from the James Ranch in the Animas Valley will discuss and demonstrate the art of cheese making beginning at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Animas Valley Grange, 7271 County Road 203, just north of Durango.

The event is part of the grange’s Speaker Series. James has been making artisan cheese for more than 15 years starting with his first cow, Dolly.

The cow herd has grown and the cheese business is growing as well. Come and join and learn some basics on cheese making and also enjoy some cheese tasting.

The event is free and open to the public.
