Animas High’s Faith Mewmaw up-and-down in first round of state golf

One birdie and one par highlights of day for sophomore

Faith Mewmaw is only a sophomore but already has three rounds of state championship golf on her résumé.

The Animas High School girls golfer represented Durango High School on Monday in the opening round of the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A Girls State Championship at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie.

Mewmaw had a tough time on the closing holes of each nine but had one birdie and one par in the round. She finished the day at 41-over-par 113. She birdied the par-3 fifth hole and the par-4 eighth hole on her back-nine after starting the day on the 10th tee box.

Mewmaw sits in a tie for 64th place in the 87-girl field.

Loveland’s Lauren Lehigh leads the tournament at 1-over-par 73. She birdied four holes in the round and hit 13 of 14 fairways. She hit 29 putts, an average of 1.61 per hole.

Lehigh is two strokes ahead of Lauren Murphy of Glenwood Springs and Sydney Prey of Golden.

Loveland leads the team competition at 17-over. Windsor is second at 35-over, and Golden sits in a tie for third with Vista Peak at 39-over. Durango did not qualify a whole team for state, with Mewmaw the team’s lone representative.

Mewmaw will close out the season in the second round of the state tournament Tuesday on the same course.
