Animas River raft race set for today

In this photo from the 2010 Battle of the Animas raft race, the Carver Brewing Co. team celebrates a hard-won victory. A spring runoff tradition in Durango, teams from various tourism-related businesses paddle to befirst down the river.

People who want to see some furious paddling might want to catch the 13th annual Battle of the Animas slated for today.

The raft race brings six- to eight-member teams from tourism-related businesses onto the river for some friendly but serious competition. Token prizes are awarded to the winners, but it’s more about bragging rights than anything else.

Teams from restaurants, tourist shops, businesses and rafting companies will start at 11 a.m. from the 29th or 32nd street put-ins.

At 12:30 p.m. a complimentary barbecue and trophy presentation will take place at Steamworks Brewing Co.

Serious Texas Bar-B-Q is the defending champion.
