Animas River Trail safety for all

As a neighbor of the recently deceased bike rider whose fall was caused by a loose dog encounter, I am deeply saddened for his family and irate at the irresponsible dog owner.

As a 25 year Durango resident, I am frustrated by the chaos that is now the norm on the ART. City code says that dogs should be leashed and class I/II e-bikes are allowed. City documents state that “all trail users should be aware and respectful of other users regardless of their mode, speed or skill level.”

While I understand that non-leashed dogs are the topic of the moment, the true problem is a general, blatant disregard for others.

Cyclists of all modes fly by walkers within inches with no warning at all. Non-authorized vehicles are regularly present (motorized skateboards/scooters and class III e-bikes). There are no posted speed limits (10 mph is recommended by the city).

All of these are factors in the current unsafe conditions that exist. While I certainly understand that loose dogs running amok is a real concern, there are many factors that need to be addressed.

Please be respectful of everyone out there. E-bikes are quiet and travel faster than standard bikes – slow down and get a bell. Warn others when you are passing (on a bike or on foot) – give each other some space. Control your dog (even leashed dogs can also be dangerous).

The ART is for everyone and a little consideration for others will go a long way.
