The city of Durango is seeking a variety of perspectives from residents on how best to boost safety on the Animas River Trail.

According to a Thursday news release, a dozen residents will meet for two sessions – Jan. 22 and 29 – to hash out the best way to make the multiuse trail safer.

“The group will provide feedback to help staff make a recommendation to council, including development of a speed management plan on the city’s shared-use paths overall, a comprehensive speed enforcement plan, and design and implementation of signage and educational campaigns,” the release said.

The safety group is the latest development in an ongoing conversation about making the multiuse trail safer.

In November, City Council considered implementing a 10 mph speed limit on the trail, but voted to postpone the decision due to a lack of information and community buy-in. A study session Dec. 2 with City Council, a group of city employees and law enforcement ended with the recommendation to form a focus group to garner more community input for the initiative.

According to the release, the city is looking for a Durango resident; a La Plata County resident; a mobility, recreation or accessibility nonprofit staffer; a regular user of the Animas River Trail; a community organization representative; a resident with speed or safety concerns about the trail; a bike shop owner or employee; a youth representative younger than 18; a young adult representative between 19 and 25; and a person with mobility challenges.

Applications can be submitted at engage.durangoco.gov/focus-groups no later than Jan. 6.
