The Durango Botanical Society has been busy developing new public gardens on the grounds to the north of the library this summer. Our latest project – the Arboreta Along The River Trail – will make this space next to the library building a more inviting, serene and welcoming area for children, visitors to our city, and of course, the people of Durango and the surrounding communities.
We are dedicating the Miniature Tree Garden on Friday, Sept. 28 and will be thanking our very generous donors, supporters, and most especially, our nursery partners, Native Roots, and Durango Nursery & Supply.
Thanks to both David Salman at High Country Gardens and David Temple at Trees of Trail Canyon who both – just this week – donated additional new trees to these gardens.
My old college dictionary defines an Arboretum as a place “where different trees or shrubs are grown for study or popular interest.” The purpose of the DBS arboreta is to educate and demonstrate ideas related to the drought-tolerant and small-scale landscaping that is essential in the Southwest.
These gardens present four seasons of color, shape, texture and visual interest for visitors to enjoy and to make part of their own home landscapes.
