Archaeology talk in Cortez to address kivas

As a part of the Four Corners Lecture Series, Chuck Riggs will present “Secular and Sacred: Evaluating Kiva Function in the Mesa Verde Region” at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church, 515 Park St., in Cortez.

Riggs will focus on recent work at the Bowthorpe and Pigg sites that contradicts the traditional assumptions that kivas were strictly religious spaces. Research suggests that these structures were used for habitation well into the Pueblo III period, 1150-1350 A.D.

The event is presented by Hisatsinom Chapter of the Colorado Archaeology Society.
