Are renewables ready for prime time?

LPEA Board elections are happening. Our future – renewable energy is infinite, cheap and environmentally friendly. But is the technology for utilizing these sources of energy at a point of development that makes it really cost effective and environmentally friendly now?

To those who yell “absolutely” over quieter voices, how do we dispose of solar panels when they expire? How is solar power stored for use at night, on cloudy, rainy or snowy days? Batteries for this purpose are not yet developed and battery disposal is already a problem. More environmentally friendly waste?

Are solar panels in their infancy stage of development? Are solar farms good for the earth and the habitat around them? Wind farms are killing raptors and causing human health problems.

Why don’t we hear more about hydroelectric power? We have a plant below Electra Lake. Maybe it’s because there aren’t special interest groups that will gain financially.

Yes, use of renewable energy is the way of the future but there are still many pieces that need to be developed before we can actually attain environmentally friendly, 24/7/365 use of those energy sources. Because of this, we need to carefully choose our LPEA board and vote for directors who will examine viable options, educate themselves on all issues, and cautiously move in a direction that will set our co-op up for success now and in the future.

Look beyond buzzwords. Choose directors who are civil, intelligent, thoughtful and cautious. Vote for Karen, Kohler and Gene.
