High school basketball teams Durango, Bayfield and Ignacio all competed Saturday around the state.
The Durango girls wrapped up action at Pueblo County’s tournament and finished 3-1 at the competition. After winning its first two games against Palmer and Widefield, DHS started Saturday by beating Lakewood’s Bear Creek, 51-26. Mason Rowland scored 20 points to lead the Demons while seven of her teammates also contributed points.
The Demons then squared off with Green Mountain (Lakewood) Saturday afternoon, but had its five-game winning streak snapped 56-32. The game was tied at 9-9 after the first quarter, but Green Mountain outscored DHS 13-4 in the second and never looked back. Rowland scored 21 points for DHS in the loss.
Durango’s boys, meanwhile, won a tight game, 45-44, against Littleton on Saturday to finish fifth at Ponderosa’s Mustang Invitational.
DHS trailed Littleton 15-13 after the first quarter, but took a 27-25 lead into halftime. The Demons were able to extend its lead to eight points heading into the final quarter, 39-31. Littleton rallied in the fourth, but the Demons were able to finish on top by a single point to win the fifth-place game.
Anthony Flint scored 16 points to lead DHS, and Maddox Bryant knocked down four 3-pointers to add 12.
Durango’s boys are now 5-2 overall. The DHS girls are 5-3.
The Ignacio boys’ and girls’ teams, meanwhile, headed to Telluride for a neutral-site contest against Crested Butte.
In the boys’ game, Gabe Tucson went off for 27 points to help Ignacio score a 49-27 victory over Crested Butte.
Ignacio’s girls also scored a convincing victory over Crested Butte, 57-18. The Bobcats jumped out to a 12-3 lead after the first quarter and continued to extend it. The Ignacio girls also were scheduled to take on Pagosa Springs on Tuesday as this paper was going to press.
Both Ignacio teams were 2-2 after beating Crested Butte.
Bayfield’s Wolverines, meanwhile, competed in Buena Vista’s tournament on Saturday, but came up short. The BHS boys fell to Grand Valley (Parachute) 87-62, and the BHS girls fell to Gunnison, 44-24. The Bayfield boys are currently 1-4, and the girls are 0-4.
