Armed robbery suspect hits another Durango gas station

Speedway robbed at gunpoint; man becoming more aggressive, police say
An armed suspect, pictured here, is accused of robbing two gas stations in the past week in Durango.

Gas stations on north Main Avenue beware: An armed man has robbed two stations within a week, and his behavior appears to be growing more aggressive, according to the Durango Police Department.

Police were called about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday to the Speedway gas station at 1991 Main Ave., where a man is suspected of holding a gun to the store clerk’s head and demanding money, police said.

The suspect took off with cash before authorities arrived. A K-9 unit was used to track the man, but the dog lost the man’s scent, said Durango police Cmdr. Rita Warfield.

Authorities believe the suspect is the same man who robbed another gas station Nov. 12.

In that case, the suspect is thought to have entered the Circle K gas station at 1801 Main Ave. around 9:30 p.m. Nov. 12. He displayed a firearm, but did not point the weapon at the clerk, according to police. The clerk gave the man money from the cash register, and he took off on foot, police say.

Police believe the suspect entered the same Circle K around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and was about to rob the gas station again, but customers entered the store and the suspect abandoned his plan and left the service station.

The Speedway gas station near 20th Street and Main Avenue in Durango was robbed at gunpoint about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police are asking anyone with information to call detective Josh Newman at 375-4733.

The suspect is described as being white, about 5 foot 8 inches, with a thin-to-medium build. He was wearing a black hoodie, light-colored jeans, a dark-blue face mask and a gray baseball hat with a dark blue/black brim.

Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to call detective Josh Newman at 375-4733.

Warfield also asked anyone in the area with home security surveillance to review footage for any clues.
