Art history lecture series to begin

“A is for Art, B is for Bernini,” an art history lecture series with Judith Reynolds will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays from Thursday to March 5 at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.

The cost is $65 for center members and $75 for nonmembers. There is a $15 drop in fee available. Free discussion sessions will take place at 10 a.m. Fridays after the Thursday lectures in the Education Studio. Lectures will include: “Introduction & A is for Architecture” on Thursday; “Picasso: Reinventing Western Art” on Feb. 12; “Protest Art: Crisis, Anger, & Change” on Feb. 19; “Public Art: Issues and Aesthetics” on Feb. 26; and “Conceptual & Visionary Art Today” on March 5. A free bonus session titled “Innocent Wisdom: The Influence of Children’s Expression on Contemporary Art” will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. April 2. The new series builds on last year’s “Art as a matter of life and death” which explored architecture, sculpture and painting from prehistoric times to the present day. New topics have been developed for 2015 guided by attendee input and interests. All fees will be donated to the center’s Education Fund.

Author to speak at Durango library

Dee Williams, author of The Big Tiny, will speak from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 10 at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave. The Big Tiny is the story of how Williams built her own house with her own two hands, all 84 square feet of it, and discovered that the important stuff in life isn’t stuff. She is the founder of Portland Alternative Dwellings, a tiny house education, resources and consulting company. A book signing will follow the author’s presentation.

First Thursday Art Walk to be held

First Thursdays Art Walk will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday.

First Thursdays Art Walk is a monthly gallery walk celebrating the art and artists of participating galleries and alternative art venues of Durango. Participating venues of First Thursdays Art Walk host activities and artists during each event.

‘Beginning Watercolor Painting’ offered

“Beginning Watercolor Painting” with Peggy Lynch will take place from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. from Wednesday to March 4 at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.

The cost is $120 for center members and $140 for nonmembers. Beginning watercolor painting with teaching artist Lynch will explore the fundamentals of materials, techniques and joy of watercolor painting.

Drawing the human skeleton available

“Drawing the Human Skeleton” with Ed Bolster will take place from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays from March 5 to March 26 at the Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.
